We’re now well into the 21/22 NHL season and longer term trends are starting to show in each team’s performance. With model projections giving us a reference point for how strong each team’s even strength offense was expected to be, let’s take a look at which teams have fallen in line with the projections and which have surprised.

The Vancouver Canucks fired GM Jim Benning, AGM John Weisbrod, and Head Coach Travis Green on Sunday after a dismal start to the season. Today, we’ll put ourselves in the GM’s chair and develop an Armchair GM Plan for the Canucks.

With the Vancouver Canucks currently in disarray, I decided to check in on one of the biggest trades from the past offseason. The Vancouver Canucks acquired Conor Garland and Oliver Ekman-Larsson from Arizona for a package of players and picks in what was clearly a move to win this season. Let’s take a look at the early returns on the deal.
NHL Regular Season Brief: Nov 10
Since last week’s update, we’ve seen a number of season opening streaks come to an end. The Carolina Hurricanes were handed their first loss by the Florida Panthers, the Panthers picked up their first regulation loss against the New York Rangers, and the Coyotes finally found the win column against the Seattle Kraken. The Dallas Stars now have the only active season opening streak, as they are the only team without a regulation win. Let’s recap how each division has fared over the past week.

With star RFAs Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes re-signing just in time to join the Vancouver Canucks for the start of the regular season and a blockbuster offseason trade bringin Conor Garland and Oliver Ekman-Larsson to Vancouver, the Canucks started the 21/22 season looking to return to the playoffs after a disappointing 20/21 campaign. Let’s take a look at their early season results and compare to my full season projections.
