Atlantic Division Snapshot: October 17, 2022

In the last Atlantic Division Snapshot, we looked at how the teams were shaping up ahead of the regular season with training camps in progress. With the first week of the regular season now in the books, let’s take a look at how the landscape has changed with results of games played through Oct 15 included.

Atlantic Division Snapshot: September 27, 2022

Training camps are underway. There are still some final roster decisions to be made, but we have a pretty good idea what each team will look like when the regular season gets underway. Let’s take a look at the current Atlantic Division landscape, along with the most notable roster moves each team made since our last Atlantic Division Snapshot in mid July.

Player Prognosis: Jonathan Huberdeau – August 2, 2022

Entering the 2022 offseason with one year remaining on his current contract before hitting unrestricted free agency in 2023, Jonathan Huberdeau became one of the largest trades in recent NHL history. With Matthew Tkachuk looking for a new home for the long term, the Florida Panthers dealt Huberdeau to the Calgary Flames to acquire Tkachuk.

Player Prognosis: Matthew Tkachuk – August 1, 2022

An RFA with just one year left before qualifying for unrestricted free agency, Matthew Tkachuk informed the Calgary Flames that he would not sign a long term deal in Calgary. The Flames moved quickly, finding a deal with the Florida Panthers to salvage some value from Tkachuk after losing Johnny Gaudreau for nothing earlier in the offseason. Tkachuk is set to start a new chapter in his career next season after signing an 8 year deal with the Panthers.

Atlantic Division Snapshot – July 9, 2022

With the NHL entry draft complete, free agency looms on the horizon of the 2022 offseason. While the prospects selected at the draft are mostly years away from having an impact at the NHL level, that doesn’t man that teams didn’t reposition themselves for the upcoming season. Let’s take a look at how the Atlantic Division landscape has evolved since my initial offseason snapshot, with roster transactions included up to the end of the draft.

Atlantic Division Snapshot – June 25, 2022

The Atlantic Division looked like a distinct caste system in 2021-2022 with the top 4 teams among the best in the entire NHL while the bottom 4 teams were more than a few steps behind. Will the status quo prevail in 2022-2023 or are there teams that may cross the large chasm in the standings? Which teams are in the best position to improve their rosters over the summer as the offseason gets underway?
