It’s time. The Jeff Petry Trade Web is massive. I’ve shared parts of it over the past few weeks but the reality is, there’s a lot left and I can’t possibly summarize all the connected storylines succinctly in a series of posts. Hopefully, the previous posts in the series have given an idea of the type of storylines that can be followed within the trade web. Now, it’s time to put it all out there and let you find the storylines that interest you. We’re about to stomp on the accelerator and power through the complete trade web. Let’s go.
The Jeff Petry Thread
We started with the trade that sent Jeff Petry to the Montreal Canadiens from the Edmonton Oilers at the 2015 trade deadline (Part 1). The trade also led into the trade web with the Oilers subsequently trading both they picks acquired in the Petry trade.
Petry signed a 6 year extension with the Habs in June of 2015 and he signed another 4 year extension after Montreal’s improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020. The deals have kept him under team control ever since the original trade.
In 2022, the Habs traded Petry to to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Mike Matheson. A year later, the Canadiens re-acquired Petry as part of the Erik Karlsson to Pittsburgh blockbuster before flipping Petry to the Detroit Red Wings. The Karlsson trade provides loose end connection to the larger trade web, as Karlsson has four years remaining on an 8 year extension he signed the the San Jose Sharks after he was acquired from the Ottawa Senators.
Cam Talbot Thread
The draft picks that the Oilers acquired in the Jeff Petry trade were flipped in subsequent trades. One was included in the deal that brought Cam Talbot to Edmonton and was traded again before the Washington Capitals used it to select Jonas Seigenthaler. The other was used to select Caleb Jones. Jones was eventually traded to the Chicago Blackhawks after the Oilers first round loss in the 2020 North Division playoffs and the deal brought Duncan Keith to Edmonton.
Taylor Hall Thread
Siegenthaler’s trail continues into the Taylor Hall thread, which we covered in detail in Part 6. Siegenthaler was acquired by the Devils with one of the picks they acquired by sending Hall to the Arizona Coyotes. The Hall to Arizona trade also netted the Devils Kevin Bahl and Dawson Mercer. The Devils had originally acquired Hall in a 1-for-1 trade with the Oilers and the other player in that deal, Adam Larsson, was selected by the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft.
Martin Hanzal Thread
Kevin Bahl appeared in the NJD/ARI Taylor Hall trade after Arizona drafted him with a pick they acquired by sending Martin Hanzal to the Minnesota Wild at the 2017 trade deadline. The Wild received a pick in that trade as well, which they used to select Mason Shaw in 2017. The other two picks Arizona acquired in the deal also lead to more moves. Arizona selected PO Joseph in the 1st round in 2017 and subsequently traded him to Pittsburgh in the deal that brought Phil Kessel to the desert. The Minnesota 2019 4th round pick was traded 5 more times, the first 3 of which we see in this thread, including deals that sent Jamie Oleksiak from the Dallas Stars to the Pittsburgh Penguins and back again. Oleksiak was then taken by the Kraken in the expansion draft.
Derick Brassard Thread
Continuing the trail of the Minnesota 2019 4th round pick from the Martin Hanzal trade, we see find it in two more deals in the Derick Brassard thread. First, it was part of the deal that brought Brassard to the Florida Panthers from the Penguins. Next, it was shipped to the Columbus Blue Jackets when Florida traded up in the 2019 draft. The pick was finally used by the Blue Jackets to select Eric Hjorth, while Florida drafted Cole Schwindt with the pick they traded up for. Schwindt was subsequently dealt to the Calgary Flames in the 2022 summer blockbuster that saw Matthew Tkachuk move to the Panthers and Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weeger relocate to Calgary. The Brassard to Florida trade also leads down other notable paths, as Brassard was subsequently moved to the Colorado Avalanche while Pittsburgh moved Jared McCann to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he was taken by the Kraken in the expansion draft. To acquire McCann, Toronto sent Filip Hallander to the Penguins.
Matt Duchene Thread
The Maple Leafs had acquired Hallander in 2020 in another deal with the Penguins, after the Penguins had drafted him with a pick that originated from the 2017 three team blockbuster that saw Matt Duchene move to Ottawa, Kyle Turris move to Nashville and seven assets go to the Colorado Avalanche. Along with the pick that turned into Hallander, The Av’s haul included Sam Girard and a 2019 1st round pick that they used to select Bowen Byram. Duchene was traded again at the 2019 trade deadline, this time to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Derick Pouliot Thread
The Derick Pouliot thread precedes both the previous two threads above, with a pick from the deal that saw Pouliot go to the Vancouver Canucks moved again in the three team deal that sent Brassard to Pittsburgh before he was traded to the Panthers. Another pick from the Brassard to Pittsburgh deal was used in the Filip Hallander series of trades. The PIT/OTT/VFK Brassard trade also saw Ryan Reaves enter the trade web; acquired by the Vegas Golden Knights, then the New York Rangers, then the Minnesota Wild. Ottawa flipped Filip Gustavsson to the Wild for Cam Talbot (he was a UFA in between this appearance and the one in the Cam Talbot thread, making this a separate connection), as well as subsequently moving the 1st and 3rd round picks they acquired in the Brassard trade.
Nate Schmidt Thread
The 3rd round pick that Vegas acquired when they sent Ryan Reaves to the Rangers was subsequently used to move up in the 2022 draft. The Winnipeg 3rd round pick that Vegas acquired in that trade from Toronto previously landed in the Leafs’ hand when they sent Travis Dermott to the Canucks, while the Canucks acquired it before that when they sent Nate Schmidt to the Winnipeg Jets. Schmidt, of course, was previously acquired by the Canucks from the Golden Knights in exchange for a 3rd round pick. Vegas traded that pick along with Nick Holden to acquire Evgeni Dadonov from the Ottawa Senators.
Shea Weber Thread
Dadonov was traded to the Montreal Canadiens by the Golden Knights, leading us to the ghost of Shea Weber and his LTIR contract. Dadonov would be traded again at the 2023 trade deadline, this time to the Dallas Stars, with Denis Gurianov heading to Montreal. Weber’s contract was also moved again, this time to Arizona with Dysin Mayo heading to Sin City. Weber’s contract was a 14 year deal signed with the Nashville Predators after he signed an offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers and he arrived in Montreal via the blockbuster trade that also sent PK Subban to the Predators.
PK Subban Thread
PK Subban didn’t last as long with the Predators as Weber did with the Habs. Subban was traded to the Devils in 2019, connecting to a host of draft pick swaps and other trades that saw Arizona draft Victor Soderstom, Philadelphia draft Bobby Brink and Cam York, Nashville draft Egor Afanasyev, and Minnesota acquire Nick Bonino.
Gustav Nyqvist Thread
One final connection from the Subban thread ties to another trade between the Minnesota Wild and the Detroit Red Wings as they swapped draft picks. The pick that Minnesota traded up for was acquired by Detroit when they traded Gustav Nyqvist to the San Jose Sharks. The other pick they acquired in the Nyqvist deal was used to select Albert Johansson.
Rick Nash Thread
Back to the 2018 1st round pick that Ottawa acquired in the Derick Brassard trade (in the Pouliot Thread). The Rangers traded up to acquire that pick from Ottawa and select K’Andre Miller. The Sens acquire two picks in return, including one that they used to select Jacob Bernard-Docker. That pick had previously been acquired by the Rangers when they traded Rick Nash to the Boston Bruins. (Note – Nash was actually still in his deal signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets, which connects the 2012 CBJ/NYR Nash trade as well. It leads to another monster trade web, over a somewhat different period in NHL history so I’ve left that as an open end for now). The Rangers also acquired Ryan Spooner and a 7th round pick that was later traded to Carolina in the Nash deal.
Jordan Eberle Thread
After acquiring Spooner in the Nash trade, the Rangers flipped him to the Oilers in exchange for Ryan Strome. The Oilers had acquired Strome from the Islanders in exchange for Jordan Eberle and they flipped Spooner again to re-acquire Sam Gagner from the Canucks.
Ron Hainsey Thread
Back to the swap of 7th round picks between the Rangers and Hurricanes from the Nash thread, the trail of the pick from Carolina’s side traces back through the Canes acquisition of Trevor van Reimsdyk and Pittsburgh’s acquisision of Ron Hainsey.
Dougie Hamilton Thread
Back to the Pouliot thread again and the 3rd round pick that Ottawa acquired in the Derick Brassard trade. That pick was subsequently traded to Carolina so the Sens could move up in the 2019 draft to select Mads Sogaard. The pick Ottawa acquired in that trade had landed in the Canes hands when they traded Adam Fox to the Rangers. Fox had arrived in Carolina as part of the 2018 summer blockbuster that saw Dougie Hamilton and Michael Ferland head to the Hurricanes and Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin move to the Calgary Flames.
Curtis Glencross Thread
Hamilton’s journey didn’t start with the Flames though. He was previously acquired by the Flames from the Boston Bruins in a deal that included a pick from the deal that sent Curtis Glencross to the Washington Capitals at the 2015 trade deadline. We looked at the entire Glencross thread and sub-threads in detail in Part 5. It saw the Flames draft Oliver Kylington, the Bruins draft Jeremy Lauzon and the Coyotes draft Adin Hill. (Note – the 2015 2nd round pick Calgary acquired in trade 15C was actually a TBL pick. It looks like the origins trace back to the 2014 trade that saw the New York Rangers acquire Martin St-Louis. Like the open end on the Nash thread, this one looks hairy and predates the original Jeff Petry trade so I’ve left it as an open end for future investigation for now.)
Adin Hill Thread
Adin Hill was traded twice after being drafted by the Coyotes, first to the San Jose Sharks and then to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Jeremy Lauzon Thread
Lauzon was selected by the Kraken in the expansion draft before being traded to the Nashville Predators at the 2022 trade deadline.
Reilly Smith Thread
Reilly Smith was acquired by the Penguins from the Golden Knights during the 2023 offseason. The 2024 3rd round pick acquired by Vegas in that trade was their own, which they dealt to the Penguins in a 2023 deadline deal to acquire Teddy Bleuger. The Golden Knights originally acquired Smith from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Expansion Draft Considerations and a 2018 4th round pick.
Mike Hoffman Thread
The 2018 4th round pick from the 2017 Reilly Smith trade was subsequently traded to the Sharks for Mike Hoffman, who the Sharks had acquired from the Senators just hours prior. Draft pick trades that fell out from the OTT/SJS Hoffman deal notably saw the Buffalo Sabres later draft JJ Peterka. In the SJS/FLA Hoffman deal, San Jose also acquired the Florida 2nd round pick that we saw in the Hamilton thread. In between, it was part of the blockbuster deal that saw Erik Karlsson traded from the Senators to the Sharks in 2018. Ottawa also acquired the first round pick they used to select Tim Stuzle in 2020 and Dylan DeMelo in the Karlsson deal and they subsequently traded DeMelo to the Winnipeg Jets for a 3rd round pick.
Back to the Jeff Petry Thread
With four years remaining on an extension he signed with the Sharks, Erik Karlsson was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2023 offseason in the trade that saw the Montreal Canadiens re-quire Jeff Petry.
