The Jeff Petry Trade Web: Part 5 – The Curtis Glencross Thread

In Parts 1-4 of the Jeff Petry Trade Web series, we’ve been following the entire NHL chronologically as numerous origin threads appear independently. In Part 4, we saw a number of threads tie together. For Part 5, we’re going to change our approach as the threads start to branch off again and focus on a complete look at individual threads.

If you missed the earlier posts in the series, you can find them here:

The Curtis Glencross Thread

First up, we’ll follow the Curtis Glencross thread through to it’s current state. The thread first appeared in Part 1, at the 2014-2015 trade deadline, when Curtis Glencross was traded to the Capitals by the Flames. Connecting trades so far have resulted in Dougie Hamilton moving twice, the Flames drafting Oliver Kylington and the Coyotes drafting Adin Hill. So far, it’s not connected to the rest of the web. Here’s what it looked like at the end of Part 4:

Dougie Hamilton Thread

The Glencross thread has grown large enough that it’s easier to follow using some sub-threads. We’ll start by picking up the trail from the Dougie Hamilton trade to the Carolina Hurricanes. Included in the package sent to Carolina was prospect Adam Fox, who had stated that he had no intention of signing anywhere but with the New York Rangers. Perhaps the Hurricanes tried to convince him otherwise, but they were clearly unsuccessful as they shipped Fox to the Rangers before his signing rights expired for a pair of 2nd round picks.

The Hurricanes would go on to draft Noel Gunler at the 2020 draft with one of the picks. The 2019 pick was traded again during the 2019 offseason, which is where the Glencross thread ties into the rest of the trade web. The Hurricanes traded down from 37th overall to 44th overall and acquired a 3rd round pick in the process. Their trade partner was the Ottawa Senators, who acquired the two picks sent to Carolina in previous trades from the trade web. The Sens had acquired the 2nd round pick in the Erik Karlsson trade to San Jose during the 2018 offseason and they had acquired the 3rd round pick in the Derick Brassard trade to the Penguins.

Adin Hill Thread

The Coyotes had drafted Adin Hill in 2015 with a pick that stemmed from the Glencross trade. During the 2021 offseason, they traded Hill to the San Jose Sharks in a trade where the two teams swapped depth goaltenders.

A year later, Hill was on the move again. This time, it was to the Vegas Golden Knights. The Knights had learned that Robin Lehner required surgery that would keep him out of the entire 2022-2023 season and Hill looked to be some insurance in goal with Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit also on the roster.

Hill would go on to play a key role in the Golden Knights 2023 Stanley Cup run after both Thompson and Brossoit went down injured and he signed a two year extension on the eve of free agency, keeping his connection to the trade web alive.

Jeremy Lauzon Thread

Another sub thread spawned from the Glencross thread in the summer of 2021 with the Seattle expansion draft. While Seattle didn’t have the same impact on the trade web as Vegas had in 2017 through trades before and after the expansion draft, they did have an impact through their selections in the expansion draft. Given the players involved remained under team control through the expansion draft process, I see these as psuedo-trades that tie into the web.

One of the Kraken’s selections in the expansion draft was Jeremy Lauzon, who they selected from the Boston Bruins. The Bruins had drafted Lauzon with one of the picks they received in the trade that sent Dougie Hamilton to Calgary in 2015. Lauzon’s stint with the Kraken was short-lived, however, as he was traded to the Predators at the 2022 trade deadline.

Curtis Glencross Thread

The original Dougie Hamilton trade provided one more branch for the Curtis Glencross thread. Zach Senyshyn, who was selected by Boston with the first round pick received from the Flames in the Hamilton trade, was subsequently traded to Ottawa for Josh Brown during the 2021-2022 season.
