Roster News Roundup: May 7, 2023

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full swing but that doesn’t mean the NHL is devoid of offseason roster news. There has been a steady stream of teams signing prospects, as well as a trickle of extensions for players that should be regular NHLers next season. Let’s take a look at some of the more notable transactions since the end of the regular season.

Are The Calgary Flames Unlucky?

The Calgary Flames have underperformed expectations this season. The loss of Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk in the offseason certainly hurt, but they came out of the summer with a roster that was widely expected to be playoff worthy and possibly even a contender. They haven’t lived up to that billing though and, with 13 games left on the schedule, they sit outside the playoffs chasing a wild card spot.

What’s behind the Calgary Flames struggles this season?

Sample sizes are still small though and while some early performances are sustainable, it’s far from a universal truth.

Pacific Division Snapshot: September 26, 2022

We took our last look at the Pacific Division on July 20, two days before the biggest trade of the salary cap era rocked the NHL. Training camps are underway and, while teams still have some final roster decisions to make, we have a pretty good idea of what each team will look like this season. Let’s take a look at how the landscape has changed since mid July as we get set for puck drop on the regular season.

Player Prognosis: Jonathan Huberdeau – August 2, 2022

Entering the 2022 offseason with one year remaining on his current contract before hitting unrestricted free agency in 2023, Jonathan Huberdeau became one of the largest trades in recent NHL history. With Matthew Tkachuk looking for a new home for the long term, the Florida Panthers dealt Huberdeau to the Calgary Flames to acquire Tkachuk.
