Regular Season Brief: Dec 8

Let’s take a look around the league at team performance over the past week and the updated full season standings projections.

Pacific Division

The Battle of Alberta continues at the top of the Pacific Division with the Calgary Flames retaking the lead in the full season projection from the Edmonton Oilers this week. Both teams cooled off this week with the Flames going 2-2-0 and the Oilers 1-3-0. The Anaheim Ducks have recovered from a short losing streak and now have a 5 game point streak going, propelling them just ahead of the Kraken in the full season projection. The Canucks seem to have stabilized following a steady decline for the past month that lead to the house cleaning in Vancouver over the weekend.

Central Division

The Colorado Avalanche are on the rise and have taken over the top spot in the full season projections in the Central Division. The Avs went 2-1-1 this week and the fact that they are finally getting healthy helped them pass the Wild in the projections. The Wild are on a 7 game winning streak themselves, helping them stick close to Avs. The Dallas Stars are also on a tear of late, with their own 7 game winning streak propelling them into third in the full season projections. After a steady decline for the past month, the Jets stabilized with a 2-1-0 record this week.

Atlantic Division

The Atlantic Division continues to look like a caste system with two classes. The Leafs, Lightning, Panthers and Bruins continue to lead the division in a relatively tight group in the full season projections. The Red Wings have made a consistent effort to stay within striking distance of the lead group, and they did so again this week with a 2-1-0 record. The Montreal Canadiens nightmare season continued in the first week of the Jeff Gorton regime with an 0-2-1 record further cratering their full season projection. The Ottawa Senators put together a 3-2-0 record this week to climb past the Buffalo Sabres and out of the division cellar in the full season projection.

Metropolitan Division

After a chaotic start to the season in the Metropolitan Division, separation is setting in. The New York Rangers and Washington Capitals now have a healthy lead atop the full season projections. The Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins have been steady, while the Blue Jackets, Devils, Flyers and Islanders have all had rough stretches that have seen them fall off the pace. The Jackets have 5 regulation losses in their last 6. The Devils have 1 win in their last 7. The Flyers are in the midst of a 9 game losing streak that saw Head Coach Alain Vigneault fired. The Islanders finally ended an 11 game losing streak in their last outing
