2021-2022 Season Projections

For all my season previews, we’ll be utilizing my 2021-2022 team and player projections. You can find much more background on these models here, along with more on assessing value of contracts here. We’ll preview the Chicago Blackhawks in this post.

2021 Offseason

The Blackhawks made some bold moves this offseason. They acquired reigning Vezina Trophy winner Marc Andre-Fleury from Vegas, along with defenseman Seth Jones from Columbus. They also shipped veteran Duncan Keith to Edmonton for Caleb Jones and acquired Tyler Johnson from the Lightning. In free agency, they brought in defenseman Jake McCabe. With Jonathan Toews also looking set to return, Chicago completed a significant make-over this summer.

2021-2022 Season Preview

Roster Strength

Chicago’s strength appears to be goaltending and defensive depth. The top pair could be a concern, as well as overall forward depth.

Forwards

With Jonathan Toews returning and the addition of Tyler Johnson, Chicago’s top six looks like it will be more dangerous this season. Both project as second line forwards and should complement Chicago’s youth movement. There are some roster spots up for grabs in the bottom six.

Defensemen

Seth Jones is likely to feature on Chicago’s top pair to start the season, although his projected impact is only that of a 2nd pair defenseman. His projected value is well below median for 21/22 and he’ll need to rebound from his downward trajectory the past couple of seasons with a big raise coming when his extension kicks in next summer. Jake McCabe was a solid addition in free agency and his projected value is near the league median. The Blackhawks best move may have been the addition of Caleb Jones, who has a very strong projection but wasn’t given much opportunity in Edmonton.

Goaltenders

Kevin Lankinen had a good rookie season in 20/21 but is still early in his NHL career. Chicago acquired Marc-Andre Fleury who will provide NHL experience and should complete a very capable tandem. Both goaltenders look like they are capable of carrying the load for stretches if required.

Team Performance

The model projects Chicago inside the playoff picture, suggesting their offseason make-over will be a success. Consistent goaltending and a bolstered top six forward group are the keys to their success.
