Bruins Notebook 26.05.22

The Boston Bruins are the roadmap chart breaker. As we noted in the March Atlantic Division Notebook, they are the living embodiment of the idea that it’s possible to remain a contender indefinitely once you get there. Since their cup win in 2011, they’ve been able to remain one of the Atlantic Division’s top teams on a consistent basis.

Cracks are starting to show in the Bruins regular season results the past two seasons but it’s not for lack of shifting their roster to maintain a primary cohort in their prime. The Bruins roster is primary in their prime with a few outliers on either side, balancing the overall age curve effects on the roster. This isn’t a team that looks like it’s about to fall off a cliff due to a veteran laden roster. The questions are more around whether they have enough top end talent to continue to hang with the Atlantic Division leaders.

David Pastrnak is certainly one of the most impactful forwards in the league and Charlie McAvoy is a solid piece to anchor the D-corps. After that, things seem to thin out a bit though and it’s reasonable to question whether some of this year’s results can be repeated, like Morgan Geekie’s 39 goal campaign. The Bruins could really use another top line forward or two to round out their roster.

Perhaps the Bruins have help coming from within their system, though, with young players like Fraser Minten and James Hagens. They acquired Minten in a reloading trade with the Maple Leafs in exchange for Brandon Carlo and they have an extra 1st round pick in hand from that deal as well. Their poor showing in 2024-2025 resulted in a 7th overall pick that netted them Hagens, who made his NHL debut late this season. They also moved the last remaining anchor piece from the previous contention cohort, Brad Marchand, a year ago to gain another first round pick.

The Bruins have been reloading for so long that it seems reasonable to think they’ll continue to do so until we see major signs that it’s unravelling. At this juncture, that’s not the case as they have a prime aged roster with young help coming down the pipeline.
