The 2018 offseason saw some big name defensemen on the move and some star power added to the Jeff Petry trade web as a result. There were also a few draft day trades that connect some of the threads from previous chapters.

Senators Start a Teardown
The Senators made a run to the Conference Final in 2017 and we saw them acquire Matt Duchene early in the 2017-2018 season as they looked to build on that success. Results didn’t follow, however, and the Senators were out of the playoff race by the trade Deadline. Ottawa brass decided they needed a rebuild and that Erik Karlsson, with one more season left on his deal, was available.
To make matters worse, rumors cropped up that alleged that Mike Hoffman’s fiancé had targeted Erik Karlsson’s wife with inappropriate social media contact. The team decided that Hoffman needed to be moved as well and he was traded to the San Jose Sharks before the 2018 draft in a package deal that saw the Senators receive Mikael Boedker in return.
The Sharks flipped Hoffman to the Florida Panthers for draft picks just hours later. While none of the picks have amounted to much at the NHL level thus far, a couple of the picks help tie the trade web together. The Vegas 2018 4th round pick Florida sent in the deal was acquired in the Reilly Smith trade from the 2017 offseason and the Florida 2019 2nd round pick San Jose received was included in another deal between the Senators and Sharks later in the offseason.
On September 13, 2018, the Sharks and Senators completed a blockbuster that sent Erik Karlsson and Francis Perron to the Sharks in exchange for Dylan DeMelo, Chris Tierney, Rudolfs Balcers, Josh Norris, a conditional 1st round pick, a 2020 1st round pick, a 2021 2nd round pick and the Florida 2019 2nd round pick from the Hoffman trade.
Hamilton Moves Again
In Part 1, we saw the Flames acquire Dougie Hamilton in the summer of 2015. The ‘Comeback Kids’ of 2014-2015 had made it to the second round of the playoffs in 2015 and adding Hamilton was meant to help push them to the next level. Things didn’t work out that way, however, as the Flames missed the playoffs in 2016, lost in the first round in 2017 and missed again in 2018.
In the summer of 2018, the Flames were once again looking for a move that could propel them to greater heights. Three seasons after acquiring Hamilton in a draft day trade, the star defensemen was shipped out of town in another draft day blockbuster. Michael Ferland and prospect Adam Fox, who had indicated he would only sign with the New York Rangers, were included with Hamilton in a package sent to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin.
Trading Up
The 2018 draft was eventful for the trade web for more than just the blockbuster deal between the Flames and Hurricanes. There were also a handful of lower profile trades that start to tie the web together.
First, the New York Rangers traded up to acquire the 22nd overall pick in 2018 from the Ottawa Senators, which Ottawa had acquired in the Derick Brassard trade the previous season. It cost the Rangers the 2018 1st round pick that they had acquired in the Rick Nash trade, which was 26th overall, and a 2018 second round pick. The Rangers would draft K’Andre Miller 22nd overall, while the Senators selected Jacob Bernard-Docker at #26.
The Rangers would also swap 7th round picks with the Carolina Hurricanes before the draft was over. They sent the 2019 7th round pick acquired in the Rick Nash trade to Carolina, while Carolina sent the 2018 pick they acquired in the Trevor van Reimsdyk trade to the Rangers.
The Pittsburgh Penguins also made a deal to move up in the 2018 draft that ties into the trade web. They acquired a 2nd round pick from the Colorado Avalanche that was previously acquired by the Avs in the Matt Duchene trade. Going the other way was a 3rd round pick, previously acquired by Pittsburgh in the Derek Brassard trade, and a 5th round pick. With the picks, Colorado drafted Justus Annunen and Danila Zhuravlyov while Pittsburgh drafted Filip Hallander.
Finally, the Nashville Predators and Florida Panthers swapped 3rd round picks in the 2018 and 2019 drafts. While it doesn’t tie into directly yet, we’ll keep an eye on this one. Florida drafted Logan Hutso with the 2018 pick, while Nashville moved the 2019 pick again.
As a final note on the 2018 offseason, we’ll jump back to the Martin Hanzal trade from the 2017 trade deadline. Arizona received Minnesota’s 2018 2nd round pick in that trade and they used it to select Kevin Bahl.
