2021-2022 Season Projections
For all my season previews, we’ll be utilizing my 2021-2022 team and player projections. You can find much more background on these models here, along with more on assessing value of contracts here. In this post, we’ll preview the Nashville Predators.
2021 Offseason
The big news in Nashville this summer came on the trade front. Ahead of the expansion draft, the Predators dealt Victor Arvidsson to the Kings for a draft pick. They also sent Ryan Ellis to Philadelphia in a three team trade that saw them acquire Philippe Myers. There was also a changing of the guard in goal, with Pekka Rinne announcing his retirement. Jusse Saros signed an extension and the Predators brought in David Rittich to complete their tandem.
2021-2022 Season Preview
Roster Strength
The Predators are thin up front, which the departure of Victor Arvidsson did not help. Their back end is solid, however, with all three defense pairs and the goaltending tandem looking solid.
Forwards
The Predators return for the 21/22 season with much the same forward group as last season. Filip Forsberg is the clear offensive leader and the Predators will need another forward to step up to fill the hole left by the departure of Arvidsson. A bounce back from Matt Duchene or Ryan Johansson would be a big win. With both of their projected values around the 25th percentile, Nashville needs more from them.
Defensemen
The Predators defense has a bit of a new look with Ryan Ellis out and Philippe Myers in. Myers has a projected impact of a second pair defenseman and the Predators top four looks solid with him in it. He comes with a favorable contract as well, with projected value well above league median.
Goaltenders
With Pekka Rinne retiring, Juuse Saros becomes the Predators undisputed starting goaltender. Along with Saros’ stellar projection, Nashville brought in David Rittich who projects as a capable backup. Goaltending should be a strength for the Predators this season.
Team Perfomance
The Predators look like a team to keep an eye on in the Central Division this season. The have a strong team projection on the back of their defense and goaltending.
