Player Prognosis: Jonathan Huberdeau – August 2, 2022

Entering the 2022 offseason with one year remaining on his current contract before hitting unrestricted free agency in 2023, Jonathan Huberdeau became one of the largest trades in recent NHL history. With Matthew Tkachuk looking for a new home for the long term, the Florida Panthers dealt Huberdeau to the Calgary Flames to acquire Tkachuk.

2021-2022 Performance

The 21/22 season was the fifth year of a 6 year deal that Huberdeau signed with the Panthers as an RFA.

  • Signed: September 6, 2016
  • Signed by: Florida Panthers
  • Length: 6 years
  • Cap Hit: $5.9M
  • Clause: NMC starting in year 3, M-NTC starting in year 6

Huberdeau set a new record for total assists by a left winger in a single season in the 21/22 season. Already projected to have a strong offensive impact, his actual performance was even stronger. Defensively, his actual impact was not as strong which came as a bit of a surprise relative to his projected impact.

Huberdeau added 5 points in the Panthers’ 10 postseason games, with 1 goal and 2 assists coming at 5v5.

2022-2023 Projections

Huberdeau heads into the 22/23 season on the final year of his current contract. The 29 year old is projected to be among the leagues top offensive threats once again next season. His defensive impact looks like a weak link, however he’s moving to a Darryl Sutter coached team where other superstar forwards found two-way success last season. With some impacts from team systems and coaching, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a stronger two-way performance from Huberdeau in the upcoming campaign.
