Player Prognosis: Andrew Mangiapane – June 17, 2022

With Johnny Gaudreau (UFA) and Matthew Tkachuk (RFA) hogging the offseason headlines in Calgary after their stellar seasons, Andrew Mangiapane has flown a bit under the radar. He’s been a key piece for the Flames in recent years and they will no doubt put a concerted effort into bringing him back for the 22/23 season. Let’s take a closer look at the RFA.

2021-2022 Season

Contract Details and Projected Value

The 21/22 season was the final year of a 2 year deal for Mangiapane. His ascent up the Flames depth chart continued over the course of the deal and the $2.425M cap hit looked like one of the best bargains in the NHL going into the season.

2021-2022 Performance

Mangiapane has been a tenacious player since he entered the league and his 5v5 results in 21/22 were once again superb. He shot over 17% at 5v5 this season, which is bound to regress at some point. However, his 5v5 shooting percentage has been over 13% for four straight seasons so the evidence is mounting that his finishing ability is above average. His offensive production was balanced with a strong defensive presence, making him a highly impactful player over the course of the season.

The Flames made it to the second round of the playoffs, where Mangiapane’s impact continued. In 12 postseason contests, Mangiapane put up 3 goals and 3 primary assists (all at 5v5).

2022-2023 Projections

Mangiapane’s projection heading into the 22/23 season is still a top line impact. His projected ice-time is lower, however and it would be reasonable to expect his impact to drop slightly if he’s put it a first line role. That seems like an unlikely scenario if the Flames find a way to bring back their top line from last season of Elias Lindholm (under contract), Matthew Tkachuk (RFA) and Johnny Gaudreau (UFA) and it’s more likely he continues to be a very strong supporting player.
